In 2007 a team of like-minded social activists of the RDP in Hermanus, led by Milly Rink met with Tania and Ronald Bownes to discuss establishing an employment facilitation project in the area. The RDP has provided social support and upliftment in the Hawston, Zwelihle and Mount Pleasant areas, for over a decade. A variety of projects already offered the full spectrum of social support including youth, training, counselling and general community services. However, the RDP team felt that the much needed task of finding work for the unemployed should be added, to complete the offering. They wanted to leverage off the success of what had been achieved by the project management team of Tania and Ronald in Hout Bay, as well as to link into the business model that was already operative. Ronald therefore helped the RDP develop its business plan and proposal, which initially targeted local and municipal government for funding. After a year of ‘selling’ the concept to various institutions, the Department of Social Development agreed to fund a DreamWorker office for 2 years, from April 2008 to March 2010. Thus DreamWorker Hermanus was born. |
